Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen. The Castle covers an area of about 5 hectares (13 acres) and contains the magnificent State Apartments which are furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection.

Its rich history spans almost 1000 years when William the Conqueror built a wooden castle on the hill at Windsor to guard the western approach to London. The Castle has since been extended and improved by various monarchs, with much of the present appearance dating from the 1820’s. The Castle was devastated by a fire in 1992 and cost £37million to restore to its former glory. Don’t miss Queen Mary’s Dolls House – a masterpiece in miniature.

St George’s Chapel is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England and the burial place of 10 monarchs. It remains an active centre for worship, with daily services open to all. The Chapel is a Royal Peculiar, that is, a chapel which is not subject to a bishop or archbishop but which owes its allegiance directly to the Sovereign

The Queen still uses the Castle regularly, spending most of her weekends there.
