Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo – the last castle to be built in Britain, with ramparts of yew on a rocky cliff near Dartmoor.

This granite castle, built between 1910 and 1930 was India’s tea baron Julius Drewe’s dream house. Castle Drogo is one of the most remarkable works of Sir Edwin Lutyens and combines the grandeur of a medieval castle with the comfort of the 20th century. A great country house with medium-sized terraced formal garden with granite steps and walls, woodland spring garden, huge circular croquet lawn hedged in yew with powerful atmosphere, shrubs and colourful herbaceous borders. Standing at more than 900ft the house overlooks the wooded Fingle Gorge of the River Teign with magnificent views of Dartmoor.

The property belongs to The National Trust.
